DECATUR, Ga. - It was truly Friday the 13th at Gellerstedt Field, the Scotties raced to a first-half lead against the visiting Owls of The W (1-2-1), only to see the Owls score two unanswered goals in the second half to down the Scotties (0-4-0) by a final score of 2-1.
In the first half, junior midfielder
Iris Ray picked up her 3rd assist of the young season, setting up teammate
Marilyn Bates in the 21st minute, who drove home the goal and gave the Scotties the early, 1-0, advantage. The Owls would challenge several times, but Scottie goalkeeper Oliviar Rosario would have another stellar performance in net, finishing the game with 12 saves for her fourth straight double-digit saves game.
The second half, played in an almost-constant rain, saw the Owls even things up in the 50th minute as Kiersten Taylor found Kimi Norway, who blasted a shot past Rosario to level the match at 1-1. The Owls would continue to threaten throughout the second half, especially Kate Blankenship, who fired 10 shots in the contest. Her barrage was finally rewarded with just 3 minutes to play, as she was able to give the Owls the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute off of an assist from Taylor.
For the contest, the Owls outshot the Scotties, 25-4, with 14 of those shots being on target. Ray was the only other Scottie able to muster a shot on goal on the evening, as the Owls defense swarmed around any serious Scottie opportunity to press the offense.
The Scotties will hope to rebound on the road, as they travel to Virginia next weekend to take on Randolph College on Friday, September 20, followed by a contest at Hollins University on Sunday, September 22.Â
