BEREA, Ky. - The tennis team of Agnes Scott College (1-10, 1-3 CCS) picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday, taking down Berea College (1-8, 1-4 CCS) by a score of 8-1. The Scotties swept through the doubles competition before winning 5 of 6 singles matches to improve their standing heading into the homestretch of Collegiate Conference of the South play.
In doubles, all three contests were close affairs, as an improved Berea squad battled with the Scotties. At the top spot, the team of
Allyson Gibbs and
Iris Ray won their match, 8-4.
Leilah Lewinson and
Rosie Hagel followed with an 8-5 win at the No. 2 spot, and
Annaliese Denbleyker and
Katherine Cox finished off the doubles sweep, with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 position.
In singles competition, Ray, Hagel, Gibbs, and
Fabiola Garcia all rolled to staright-set wins, stretching the Agnes Scott lead to 7-0 with two matches remaining on court. Lewinson and
Katiuska Toral Castillo both went to third set tiebreakers, with Lewinson prevailing in her match, 4-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(8). Castillo fell to Ti Meh at the No. 4 spot, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(3).
The Scotties look to continue their momentum as they enter a weekend matchup with Huntingdon College on the road. Both teams currently have one conference win as teams jostle for position entering the postseason. Â
