DECATUR, Ga. - Agnes Scott (2-10, 0-5 Collegiate Conference of the South) hung tough with two of the top teams in the conference, but dropped contests to Asbury (10-4, 5-0 CCS) and Belhaven (7-8, 5-1 CCS) Saturday at home.
Match One: Asbury 3, Agnes Scott 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-16)
In the first contest against the first-place Asbury Eagles, outside hitter Isabelle VandeSchraaf led the Eagles, lodging 19 kills in the contest to lead all players. As a team, the Eagles hit .255, while limiting the Scotties to a -.011 hitting percentage. Defensively,
Jahneya Reynolds led the Scotties with 12 digs on the day, and
Feliz Pearson finished with 3 kills and 3 service aces.
Match Two: Belhaven 3, Agnes Scott 1 (25-20, 25-14, 22-25, 25-16)
The second match was a much closer affair, as the previously unbeaten Blazers rebounded from the middle contest of the afternoon, dropping a conference match for the first time this season against the Eagles, 3-0, as well. The first set was a back and forth contest filled with multiple momentum shifts. The Scotties would hold their final lead of the first set at 18-17, before the Blazers would close out the set on an 8-3 run, including three consecutive aces by Miriam Ateca to finish the set, 25-20
In the second set, the Scotties were hampered by a 10-0 run for the Blazers in the middle of the set. The Scotties had raced to a 6-4 lead before the 10-point run off of the serving of Aniyah Tompkins put the game firmly in the control of the visiting team.
In the third, the Scotties exacted some revenge, as the Blazers raced to a 12-9 lead and looked to sail to victory, before some timely service runs by the Scotties put them in control.
Me'Kyah Booker would pull the Scotties ahead, serving from 9-12 and drawing several errors from the returners, puting the Scotties ahead, 13-12. After a Blazer kill evened the set at 13,
Feliz Pearson stepped to the service line, helping the Scotties with a two service aces as she helped run the score to 19-13 in favor of the Scotties. Ateca again went on a short run for the Blazers, who eventually evened the set at 22-22, before an error on the Blazers gave the Scotties the lead, 23-22.
Bryn Greenwood, entering the starting lineup for the Scotties after an injury to one of the Scottie starters, calmly stepped to the service line and served the final two points of the set, which included a kill from
Madison Stidum and an error drawn off of a strong service from Greenwood.
The fourth set, unfortunately for the Scotties, was again a story of a long service run, after the set was even at 10-10. Rylee White served 9 straight points to put the contest out of reach, as the Blazers closed out the match, 25-16.
For the Scotties, Stidum would lead the way with 13 kills and 13 digs on the afternoon. Reynolds, playing in the libero position, logged 22 digs on defense, and
Alofamoni Galoia, called into action to set the whole way around, had an excellent afternoon, dishing out 23 assists. Other notable performances were middle hitters
Sierra Lowery and Pearson, who each finished with 6 kills in the contest. Booker and
Mandy Zhang each contributed 6 digs on defense as well.
The Scotties will next travel to Piedmont (2-10, 2-3 CCS) on Wednesday, October 9, hoping to pick up their first win of the conference season as they face the Lions for the first time this season. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM on the Piedmont campus.
